The ChoraLine team are delighted to be working with Deborah Miles-Johnson and Brian Parsons from Choral Clinic in developing a complete range of 'graded' choral singing tutorials from beginner through to advanced.

The tutorials have been specially 'graded' for singers with all levels of experience. The exercises and extracts included in each level have been carefully chosen so as you gain in expertise and confidence to move up to the next level in a seamless manner.

Thank you for bearing with us and we are delighted to say orders can now be placed via the website for our own 'ChoraLine' rehearsal recordings and '3 Steps to Sing'.

I am afraid BT did not turn up yesterday to install the new phone lines and so we have now been told they cannot come until the 22nd February!

We are curently working flat out to get the website and telephone order service up and running again.

I am afraid this is taking longer than we expected due to BT sorting out the phones and we have had to change the card payment service provided by the bank which is a far slower and more complicated procedure than we appreciated.

If you wish to use ChoraLine on a Tablet (iPad, Air Nexus etc) or mobile device (android phone) this is fine but you will need an 'App' called WinZip to open the zip file.

You can experiment with downloading a ChoraLine zip file for FREE by downloading Karl Jenkins's Gloria

Once you have mastered the download process, the whole ChoraLine catalogue of over 120 of the major choral works are available at the touch of a button.

Once your file is downloaded, navigate to the folder of the downloaded file. The icon may vary slightly depending on your operating system, but the file will look like a folder with a zip on the front.

Double click the file, and the zip contents will display. Even though you can open the files and use them in the same way you would any other files in a folder, the files are all still compressed.

If you want to save your MP3s into 'iTunes', 'Windows Media Player' or any other media centre playlists, you will need to extract the files.

There are different ways to do this:

Windows XP, VISTA, WINDOWS 7

There are two ways to extract the files. You can right click on the zip file icon, and select 'Extract All'. A dialogue box will appear asking where you want to save your files. Simply give the files a home and your files are extracted.

If you prefer to use the file explorer to navigate your hard drive, double click the zip icon, highlight the files you wish to extract (holding ctrl and select all files). Right click and select copy, or hold ctrl and c. Navigate to the folder you want to save the files to, right click and select paste, or hold ctrl and v.

Creating playlists

Again this is dependent on your operating system and your choice of media player, but there are several ways to add the files to your library.

In iTunes, simply select 'all files' and drag them into the library window.

Windows Media Player operates on a similar principle, in that you drag all files in to create a playlist. Simply use the library settings to make sure your folders are being indexed.

Rachel graduated in BA (Hons) Music at Bath Spa University and has a passion for singing with Mozart’s Requiem being her favourite piece. Rachel also plays violin and has performed in several orchestras touring Austria and Germany.

The primary objective of ChoraLine rehearsal recordings has always been to assist singers in learning the notes and melody of their voice part and we now cover over 120 of the main choral works. The 'voice part' has always been represented by a musical instrument (soprano/flute, alto/oboe, tenor/french horn, bass/bassoon) so singers can follow in the vocal score and learn the 'pitch' of all their notes.

In recent years we have been receiving more and more requests to produce a ChoraLine rehearsal recording where you hear the actual words, for each voice part, sung by a choral singer and after a year in the making we are very pleased we have now finished the very first which is for Handel's Messiah.

This is a great way to learn the words and notes to your part by simply playing the CD and just sing with the Singer!

We are very aware there is always a degree of discussion around the pronunciation and performance of the words and this is always at the discretion of your conductor.

Over the next few months we plan to make 'ChoraLine With Singer' for twenty Choral works starting with the Mozart and Faure Requiems.

‘3 Steps to Sing’ was devised and developed as a brand new approach to learning the words and notes to sing Handel Messiah.

It is perfect for anyone new to choral singing and has little or no experience of sight reading. It can be used by anyone who may wish to learn their part (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) so they can sing in a 'Come and Sing' concert which are becoming more and more popular.

We wanted to create a new learning method which is very easy to use and you can start learning right away.

You see the words and notes change colour exactly in time as your part is sung by a professional singer who is a real pleasure to hear – and you just join in!

No need for hours of learning the words ‘parrot fashion’, no need for ‘note-bashing’ trying to work out what pitch to sing and no more having to guess the tempo of the music.

You will be amazed how quickly you learn and before long you are singing the words at the right pitch in harmony with the professional singer. No need to worry about the tempo and what the notes mean as you are learning both without even knowing it!

Of course there are some tricky bits which need more practice but even these you will find you learn pretty quickly by just going over several times until they become second nature to sing.

We believe this is such an easy way to learn because both ‘sight’ and ‘hearing’ are stimulated at exactly the same time so the ‘brain’ learns intuitively. It really does become quite addictive with the tune in your head and you sing all day!

Once you feel you know your part you can also practice by turning off the singers voice (using the DVD/Computer menu options) but you still hear the music and sing as the words and notes change colour.

VOICE PART REHEARSAL CD

You will need a vocal score of Handel Messiah to use in conjunction with your CD.

It is helpful to work through the vocal score marking your part with a highlighter.

A narrator guides you when to sing and calls out bar numbers and rehearsal letters so you don’t get lost.

This is a great way to rehearse and ensure you are singing the right ‘pitch’ for your words and to rehearse using the vocal score.

Choral Singers Synchronise their Heart Rates

The BBC News team have reported that 'singers not only harmonise their voices, they also synchronise their heartbeats'.

Researchers in Sweden monitored the heart rates of singers as they performed a variety of choral works and found as they sang in unison their pulses began to speed up and slow down at the same rate.

The scientists studied 15 choir members as they performed different types of songs and found the more structured the work the more the singers' heart rates increased or decreased together. Slow chants, for example, produced the most synchronicity and the overall effect of choral singing was to slow the heart rate.

We had a very exciting evening at the Music Industry Awards last Thursday at the Emirates Stadium in London.

Gods of Olympus was commissioned by the Really Big Chorus for performance at the Royal Albert Hall in July 2012.

The date of the performance if you wish to take part is 8 July 2012, in the Royal Albert Hall, London and the Armed Man will also be performed. In keeping with the spirit of the 2012 Olympiad Gods of Olympus is based on ancient Greece, birthplace of the Olympic games.
The movements are inspired by four of the twelve Olympians, the mythical Gods that dwelt on Mount Olympus: Zeus, Ruler of Olympus; Hermes, the Winged Messenger; Aphrodite, Goddess of Love; Hephaestus, Blacksmith & Fire-God.

With the forthcoming Olympic Games, Gods of Olympus is the perfect choice for Spring and Summer concerts.

The text uses Jenkins' own 'mythical' language, first used in Adiemus.

Howard Goodall - ETERNAL LIGHT:AREQUIEM

Following many requests from choirs and several months work we are delighted to have completed the ChoraLine SATB voice part rehearsal CD and MP3 for Howard Goodall's Eternal Light: A Requiem.

Our thanks and appreciation goes to Brian Kay who has worked with us on this piece and who also features on the ChoraLine recording to assist with the pronunciation of the latin words.

We believe a combination of the wealth of experience and depth of knowledge added by Brian Kay, the concise vocal cues from Martin Muncaster and the superb production and recording skills from Lloyd Silverthorne make this one of the best ChoraLine works to date.
The Lord is My Shepherd (Psalm 23) is also included on this ChoraLine recording. A wonderful piece which became the theme for the BBC TV series The Vicar of Dibley.

Howard Goodall writes in the forward of the vocal score for Eternal Light: A Requiem:
The writing of a Requiem is a special challenge for any composer. The great Requiems of the past by composers such as Mozart, Verdi and Berlioz interpret the sacred Requiem text literally, offering prayers of salvation for the departed, whose souls are assumed to be in purgatory facing a terrible judgement. Eternal Light: A Requiem is, by contrast, intended to provide solace to the grieving, reflecting on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. For me, a modern Requiem is one that acknowledges the unbearable loss and emptiness that accompanies the death of loved ones, a loss that is not easily ameliorated with platitudes about the joy waiting us in the afterlife. This, like Brahms', is a Requiem for the living, addressing their suffering and endurance, A Requiem focussing on the consequences of interrupted lives. Howard Goodall, June 2008.

Karl Jenkins is widely recognised as one of the world’s most popular and widely performed living composers. Born in Wales, he studied the oboe and graduated from Cardiff University before doing post-graduate studies at London’s Royal College of Music. A passion for jazz – he was a member of the bands Nucleus and Soft Machine – led him to composition. Classically trained, but drawing on a diverse range of global influences, Jenkins’s composing style has transcended musical boundaries.

In addition to his hugely popular Adiemus albums, which have sold over three million copies in 50 countries, his music has successfully spanned many genres and media, from ballets, oratorios and symphonic music to BAFTA-award-winning soundtracks and Montreux Festival-winning jazz groups. His inclusive approach translates into working with professional, amateur and children’s choirs locally and internationally and alongside professional orchestras and world musicians to promote classical music. H.R.H The Prince Of Wales, The Royal Ballet, The BBC, the Welsh National Eisteddfodd, Evelyn Glennie and Bryn Terfel are among those who have commissioned music from him.

The Peacemakers, a brand new choral work by Karl Jenkins features texts from some of the greatest peacemakers throughout history as well as words from the Bible and the Quar'an.

The post office will no longer guarantee first class post is 'next day delivery' but by the number of emails we receive saying "thank you, I received my order the very next day" their service is still excellent in most cases.

We are delighted to announce 2011 has been the most popular year to date for ChoraLine Rehearsal/Learning CDs and MP3 downloads.

Over 5,000 choral singers purchased a ChoraLine during January and February being the most ever for these months.

We believe this is due 2 main reasons:

ChoraLine is now available as an MP3 download, downloaded in seconds and used right away by Choral Singers all over the world.

ChoraLine MP3 Downloads Up for an Award!

ChoraLine MP3 downloads can be used on your computer and on your MP3/ipod player.

Thank you for all your positive feedback on ChoraLine rehearsal recordings which are available as an MP3 download and we have even been asked to enter them for an award due to the ease of the download process and the quality of the digital recording.

We have produced a step-by-step guide for people who are new to downloading MP3 files on to their computer and thank you for all comments on how helpful this has been - please click here for the step-by-step guide.

We did have our critics who said Choral Singers would not wish to adopt this new method but we did not agree and are now delighted we spent the time and money to push ahead with this project.

We now have over 100 of the major Choral works available for each SATB voice part as an MP3 download and are delighted with the number of singers from all over the world who are now using ChoraLine because of the ease of use of the MP3 download process.

We are also now receiving requests from Choral Societies in Australia and America who have used a ChoraLine MP3 download and now wish to 'burn' their own CDs for singers who are not set up to use an MP3 download and still would rather use a CD. The great advantage of this method is the saving in postage and please do email Andrew (andrew@musicdynamics.co.uk) if you would like some more information on this.

We are currently converting the remainder of the ChoraLine repetoire onto MP3 and plan to complete this by the end of February 2011.

We have tried to include a wide range of music which you may not have considered before, all of which have ChoraLine SATB voice part rehearsal CDs and MP3 downloads available.

  Finzi – Intimations of Immortality [for tenor soloist, chorus and orchestra]

Finzi’s music is often filled with an awareness of the frailty of life, and this setting of a text by Wordsworth is a moving evocation of the passing of childhood and its innocence. Musically it bears similarities to Bliss and Vaughan Williams, and sits squarely within the pastoral tradition of the English Romantic school.

  Chilcott – Jubilate [for soprano or tenor soloist, chorus and brass ensemble/piano]

By turns broadly grandiose and exuberantly playful (evoking the more boisterous works of Rutter), Chilcott’s English-language setting of Psalm 100 also has quieter, more intimate moments for both chorus and soloist. Interestingly, and unusually for settings of this Psalm, it ends in awed stillness rather than with a triumphant shout.

  Chilcott – Requiem [for soprano and tenor soloists, chorus and orchestra/small ensemble]

Solemn yet uplifting, this is a piece filled with reassurance and hope. From the opening, heartbeat-like motif (reminiscent of the Brahms Requiem) that permeates every movement, through the tumults of the Dies Irae and a haunting, weightless Pie Jesu, Chilcott’s approachable style is always to the fore. It is testament to his skill that even with so many Requiems already in existence, Chilcott has nevertheless managed to find something new to say in this genre.

  Mahler – Symphony No. 2 [for soprano and alto soloists, chorus and large orchestra]

2011 sees the 100th anniversary of Mahler’s death, and his “Resurrection” Symphony seems a fitting tribute for choirs looking to mark the occasion. As in Beethoven’s 9th, the chorus is saved for the last movement of this work, where it adds even greater intensity to the climax of an already emotionally charged piece. Entering in a hushed whisper, the chorus supplements the soloists’ exhortations to the soul before joining them in a thrilling finale promising eternal life.

  Tippett – A Child of Our Time [for soprano, alto, tenor and bass soloists, chorus and orchestra]

Composed in the early years of the Second World War, this is a dark work centred on the story of Herschel Grynszpan, a Jewish refugee whose murder of a German diplomat was used as the excuse for Kristallnacht. Tippett punctuates the work with American spirituals in a similar manner to Bach’s use of chorales in his Passions. With the tenth anniversary of the World Trade Centre attacks falling in September 2011, this modern meditation on injustice and terror is as relevant today as the day it was written.

  Elgar – The Spirit of England Op. 80 [for tenor or soprano soloist, chorus and

orchestra]

It is true that Elgar is closely associated with Edwardian pomp and jingoism , but his rather ambiguously-titled ‘Spirit of England’, completed in 1917, is actually a sensitive and moving commemoration for the victims of war. It is also a masterly piece of choral and orchestral writing and as such deserves much wider appreciation. In this emotive setting of several texts from Laurence Binyon’s collection of war poems ‘The Winnowing Fan’, Elgar’s personal anguish is poignantly captured in the work’s last movement ‘For the Fallen’; his powerful setting of the words ‘there is music in the midst of desolation’ demonstrating the intensity of his choral and orchestral writing.

  Stravinsky – Symphony of Psalms [for choir and small orchestra]

Written during Stravinsky’s Neoclassical phase, ‘Symphony of Psalms’ is essentially a three-movement choral symphony utilising a number of popular psalm texts. Stravinsky intended a childrens choir to sing the upper voice parts, but many performances substitute his original arrangements for a mixed voice choir. Stravinsky’s exquisite orchestration demonstrates his aptitude for fugue and counterpoint, intended to evoke church music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The orchestra omits clarinets, violins and violas.

  Gilbert & Sullivan – Trial by Jury [for soprano, tenor, two baritones, bass-baritone and bass soloists, chorus and orchestra/piano]

Trial by Jury is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most well known and popular comic operas. An opera in one act, it could make the perfect addition to a Summer concert. Based on a ‘breach of promise of marriage’ lawsuit, Trial by Jury pokes fun at the legal system with a list of ridiculous, but recognisable, characters, such as an incompetent but very ‘learned’ judge.

  Gilbert and Sullivan – The Mikado [for soprano, two mezzo-sopranos, alto, tenor, three baritones, bass-baritone and bass soloists, chorus and orchestra]

Set in exotic Japan in the fictional town of Titipu, The Mikado is a comic opera in two acts boasting an array of rather silly characters such as Nanki-Poo, the opera’s hero, Yum-Yum the attractive love interest and Pish-Tush the noble lord. Including the well-known numbers ‘Three little maids from school are we’ and ‘On a tree by a river’, The Mikado remains the most frequently performed opera at the Savoy.

   Poulenc – Stabat Mater [for soprano soloist, choir and orchestra]

Composed in response to the death of his friend Christian Berard, Poulenc’s Stabat Mater was premiered in 1951 at the Strasbourg Festival. A challenging work scored for mixed choir and orchestra, this work won the New York Critics’ Circle Award for Best Choral Work of that year. We have 2 types of discounts for our Choirs and Singers:

Bulk Order Choir Discounts

These are specific discounts provided for choirs who wish to make a bulk order. Each discount is based on the volume and value of the item being purchased. Bulk orders are, in most circumstances, for orders of 5 to 500 vocal scores and the savings are between 5% and 25% higher when compared to the other discounts we offer. The cost of post and packing is not added to the amount quoted as this is covered by us. An invoice is sent at the same time of the order and payment is not required for a month so choirs have plenty of time to collect the money from their singers. Payment is by cheque, BACS or Card. On-going Singer Discounts

These are permanent 10% discounts set up for a choir so their singers can make ‘personal’ purchases via the website and over the telephone and have a 10% saving on their total purchase. The cost of post and packing is added to the cost of the purchase after the discount has been applied. Immediate payment is required via a debit/credit card.

All year round, Marie Curie Nurses provide high quality home nursing care, totally free of charge, for people who are terminally ill. Patients and families tell us that our practical help and emotional support makes a tremendous difference - so it’s always an extremely rewarding job.

During the Christmas season we work to ensure that patients are able to spend this precious time with their families.

Every family is different, and we look for ways to help them celebrate however is best for them. Mostly we find they just want to do things as they’ve always done, and I love having time to sit down over a cup of tea and a mince pie with them while they tell me about their own special family traditions and familiar rituals.

One lady I looked after had been in hospital for around six months. She really wanted to spend Christmas and at home with her husband and children aged 10 and 13. She needed a lot of care and I spent several nights in the two weeks before Christmas providing this so that her husband could get some rest and prepare for a family Christmas. The decorations were put up in her room, the tree decorated and presents wrapped and hidden away. I spent the night of Christmas Eve with the family, and the patient, although very weak, was so happy to be at home with her family. Before I left on Christmas morning the family all came to her room and there was great excitement as presents were opened and festivities began. Sadly, I didn’t see her again as she died the next day, but it was such a privilege to be able to have been able to help make it possible for this family to spend one last Christmas together.

Most dying people don’t want to spend their last days in hospital, they want to stay in their own familiar surroundings. But some of them just couldn’t be at home if it wasn’t for the help of Marie Curie Cancer Care. They depend on us being here to help them in the lead up to Christmas and beyond. And of course, that is only made possible through the generous support of people like you.

We are delighted with our new website and hope it will be useful and informative to all our customers - old friends returning who have used our previous Music Dynamics website and new customers finding out about us for the first time.

The primary objective of our website is to provide Choirs and Singers with a 'one stop shop' which is informative and easy to use for all Choral and SATB music.

We have worked hard to try and get the site off to a good start but know it will take a while to evolve into the final 'item' which we hope will become the first port of call for all our customers due the quality of our advice, competitive prices and excellent service.

We are still working on providing greater detail on the information we provide against every item. For example, every Vocal Score will have a breakdown of the duration, voice parts, soloists and orchestration required to perform.

We are working on building the range of products and build a greater understanding of our customers needs, likes and dislikes. This will take time and do bear with us along the way.

It has taken many hours to convert the ChoraLine repetoire into an MP3 format and we are delighted with the results and hope this will open up the advantages of ChoraLine to a new audience.

We are very excited about some of the current projects we are working on and will keep you informed, via the website, of these as they progress.

We have put a good deal of research into the production of the Pronounciation recordings and look forward to seeing how well these are received by singers and choirs around the world.
